The Cashier is responsible for delivering a fast, friendly, and accurate checkout experience for customers while maintaining proper cash handling procedures and ensuring the integrity of all point-of-sale (POS) transactions. This role supports overall store operations by assisting with customer inquiries, maintaining a clean and organized checkout area, and upholding company service standards.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Greet customers promptly and courteously as they approach the checkout area.
Operate the cash register or POS system to process sales transactions, returns, and exchanges accurately.
Handle various forms of payment, including cash, credit/debit cards, gift cards, coupons, and vouchers, following company policies.
Count cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift, ensuring accuracy and reporting any discrepancies immediately.
Issue receipts, refunds, credits, and change to customers as required.
Verify the age of customers for age-restricted products in accordance with legal and company requirements.
Answer basic customer questions about products, prices, promotions, and store policies, referring to other staff when needed.
Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked checkout area, including bags, receipt paper, and other supplies.
Follow all loss prevention, security, and safety procedures, including monitoring for suspicious activity at the register.
Assist with bagging merchandise and, where applicable, help customers carry purchases to their vehicles.
Support store operations by performing light stocking, facing, and merchandising tasks near the front end as directed.
Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct, including dress code and attendance.
Collaborate with supervisors and team members to ensure smooth customer flow and minimize wait times.
Participate in required training sessions and stay informed about new products, promotions, and system updates.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) or currently enrolled in high school, as allowed by local regulations.
Previous experience in a customer service, retail, or hospitality role, or demonstrated customer-facing skills.
Basic math skills and the ability to handle cash and make change accurately.
Ability to operate or learn to operate POS systems, barcode scanners, and basic payment terminals.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with diverse customers.
Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in processing transactions.
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks such as scanning and bagging.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on business needs.
Reliability and punctuality, with a strong sense of integrity and honesty in handling money.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience as a cashier in a retail, grocery, restaurant, or similar environment.
